Lisa Taddeo's Three Women shares the details of three women's sex lives who agreed to make their stories public. The women's stories are raw, messy, and complicated. Insecurities, needing to be liked, seeking approval, desiring affection, being a good girl, being a good wife, being a strong woman, compromising, settling, accepting are all explored. Some of it is relatable; others are maddening. The women are often in vulnerable situations and their stories do include rape and sexual assault. I often had to put the book down and take a break from reading it. Only Maggie agreed to have her real name published, and she tells her side about a relationship with one of her high school teachers. Although the stories are written in a style that feels like a novel, the book feels like a collection of case studies. It's up to us the readers to analyze the role of sex in women's lives and society's influence on sex in women's lives based on the examples of three women.
